Studies can be done between the crossover of comics and wrestling. Fans love both probably because of the colorful characters and intricate dramatic story lines coupled with action. It feels like there's been a wave of wrestling comics recently, and surprisingly, they find new ways to depict the subject without rehashing a tired formula. Undisputed seems to swim in this territory as it delivers wrestling action along with characters you want to root for and a bubbling crime story.
The first issue starts off with a wrestler named Hack during his final match. He ends up losing the title and retiring in the ring. Years later, he goes on to live a fairly uneventful life. But wrestlers from his past approach him, hoping to coax him back into the ring. The full scope of the story isn't revealed in the first issue, but it appears as if criminal elements are behind wanting to force him reluctantly back into the ring.
The first issue is more or less a tease of what's to come. It starts off with some wrestling action before spending the bulk of the time building up characters and getting the story going. It's not a slam dunk of an issue, but the trendline for an enjoyable story arc is there. It's mainly just setting the stage for a bigger conflict later on, but the stakes are enjoyable. Plus, there's an indication that flashbacks will be utilized to flesh out the characters and their relationships. From a production standpoint, everything seems to flow. The lettering works and, although rough, the art style was sufficient enough to tell the story appropriately. It's a first issue that wrestling fans can get behind. Well, I guess even non-wrestling fans can find something to like about it too, as I’m not currently a wrestling fan as saw its potential.
