With AI use continuing to become more widespread it's only a matter of time before we see more AI Comics hit the marketplace. In the beginning, these were very rough endeavors. The art was all over the place, sometimes practically indecipherable. And the writing usually wasn't any better. Typically, if someone is truly invested in the storytelling of their comic they wouldn't opt for AI as it's not the best way for a sequential story to be told. That said, Kyra Chronicles is a big step forward for AI storytelling. Don't get me wrong, it still falls way short of a traditional comic in many aspects. But it's impressive to see how much the technology has evolved in such a short amount of time.
The story follows a fairly standard superhero plot involving a disgraced scientist transforming his body into a monstrous figure. He then goes on a rampage, and it's up to the titular character to stop him. That pretty much sums up the first issue in a nutshell without any other details. It's about as barebones a plot as I've seen reviewing comics.
Smartly, the issue starts off by breaking down what aspects of the comic are AI generated and which are done traditionally. Basically, all aspects of the art are done through AI and the writing is human. However, the comic as a whole does not excel. The plot is thin and barely any time is focused on building up the hero's character. The dialogue was also sparse and the lettering pretty sloppy. As for the art, it truly was a big step forward in AI technology. But the signature of AI is still all over it. It looks good, but it also doesn't look like a comic. It feels stiff and without any life. Personally, I could see this art really working well as a cutscene for an indie video game. I was also impressed with how consistent the characters look. The technology has no doubt come a long way, but it's still not there to create the best comic possible.
