Indie Comic Review: Huibert: The Most Underrated Hero to Hire

Writer's picture: Frank MartinFrank Martin

Ridiculousness can certainly have its advantages. There are plenty of comedies that play things straight up. But then there are comedies that lean so heavily into the genre that they thrive on not being taken seriously Huibert: The Most Underrated Hero to Hire definitely falls into this category. It plays on classic noir and superhero tropes to form a pretty silly story. It's not without areas that can be improved, but for fans familiar with the genre who are looking for a quick, silly goose time, it scratches a unique itch.

The story starts like most noir tales inside Huibert's office. He's visited by a widowed billionaire who needs his help. He stops by her mansion only to find thugs ready to kidnap her. Of course, she's the villain behind the story and was playing him into a trap, which he saw coming a mile away. The thugs pounce, but Huibert defeats them along with the widow. He then returns to his office to learn that the billionaire is still alive and it's his job to rescue him for real.

The plot is very paint by numbers, but that's by choice. The plot itself isn't meant to entertain, but the tone of the story is. It plays extremely over the top, leaning so heavily into cliches that it makes for an amusing read. Huibert embodies so much about what makes superheroes outdated that what could have been cringe is actually quite quaint. However, the production isn't without faults. A lot of the dialogue could have been trimmed down to not be so wordy, and the lettering could have used some editing. Also, while the rough art style works in some areas, it hinders the story in others. But overall, the comic does its job at poking fun of a very outdated genre.
