Indie Comic Review: Black Noblesse Chapters 2 & 3

Writer's picture: Frank MartinFrank Martin

If I remember correctly, the first chapter of Black Noblesse had a lot of setup, and with good reason. The world is incredibly dense and requires a lot of exposition to set up the social structure and introduce how the main characters fit within it. This changed towards the end of the chapter as the main character was arrested for murdering her adopted father. The way the story ended indicated that there was a lot more tension to come, and having read chapters 2 and 3, I can say that it didn't disappoint.

Chapter 2 begins as the girl is on trial for murder. She's never really given a chance to defend herself as the system has already deemed her guilty. The chapter largely showcases the struggle she has to go through in jail and just how alone she is while trying to fight the system. Ultimately, she defiantly accepts her fate in front of a crowd waiting for her to be executed. The chapter ends as her father's loyal butler comes to her rescue. Chapter 3 is then jam-packed with action as the two of them escape, once again ending on a cliffhanger as their blimp crashes.

There is very little extra world building in these two chapters, but whatever information is communicated comes across much more naturally than the opening chapter. Little details about knights and this world's justice system fit seamlessly into the dialogue and narrative, so it doesn't come off too bulky. Even though chapter 2 didn't have a lot of action, the tension and stakes were high, so it didn't drag. And of course, chapter 3 delivered on the action this world promised while also including some mystery as to how the butler could be so effective as a warrior. After a relatively slow start, it's nice to see this story shift into high gear fairly quickly.
